Chapter 14

Casey

That Sunday, I pace in my living room as I wait for Lydia to arrive. Today’s the day we’ll search for Ross at the highway overpass. Something needs to be done about his situation, and it won’t remedy itself if I’m too chickenshit to talk to him. My gut feels funny, like I missed a step going downstairs and I’m suddenly falling. I’ve never been in this situation before. Maybe that makes me naive. Growing up, I wasn’t exposed to struggle. I always had a roof over my head, food on the table, transportation to and from where I needed to go, support from my family. The thought of an eighteen-year-old kid, not even out of high school, living on the streets among the crime and addiction eats at me. I need to get Ross to a safe place.

Coach Michael, who’s currently out of town, gave me advice on how to handle the situation. He’s known Ross a lot longer than I have, having coached him all through high school. He said that Ross, while closed off and hard to trust, can be brought to line with a large dose of kindness. I’m hoping that strategy works, because otherwise, we’ll have to regroup.

Lydia should be here any minute. I haven’t seen her since Thursday night rehearsal. The moment our eyes locked after phone sex—oof. It was hard to keep the ravenous hunger from my expression as I imagined peeling off her clothes, tossing her onto the floor, and plowing into her from the back. That’s not exactly appropriate for theater though. So I spent the rehearsal whispering all the dirty things I’d do to her the next time I got her alone. Lydia’s face was red the entire two hours we drilled lines.

Romeo and Juliet is coming along nicely. I’ve started to arrive an hour early on Monday evenings to help build the set. We’ve finished with the balcony for the very famous But soft, what light through yonder scene. I’m having a good time getting to know the other cast members. Jim, the guy who plays Mercutio, is a man in his forties, a plumber by day and swordsman by night. He has the funniest stories about clogged toilets. They’re often disturbing and gruesome, but hilarious and messy in the way humans are. The things he’s seen stuck in the pipes ... you don’t want to know.

Art has been AWOL the last two days. The other morning, he came into my bedroom while I was sleeping and woke me up to tell me he was going on an adventure, but to not worry, because he’d be back. He had a calling.

I blinked up at him in disbelief. He was wearing a loincloth. “You interrupted my sleep to tell me this ... why?”

“Because I didn’t want you to worry about me,” he said. His glasses made his eyes look larger, and his hair was sticking up in all directions. The tips were a bright neon green.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him that I wouldn’t worry, that the longer he was gone, the better.
